5 Ways to Keep Your Kids Busy During COVID-19 Lockdown and After

Lot has happened throughout the world ever since the first case of COVID-19 was reported on 17th November 2019 in China. Ever since our lives have changed drastically. Many countries were under a lockdown including India. With cases increasing severely on a daily basis, it was important we all stayed at home for the safety of everyone. With this lockdown and schools being closed, children had a lot of time to kill. Parents had to come up with ways to keep them engaged throughout the day. India is still under the lockdown and schools are still closed and it will take a while to open. Given the fact that the lockdown has been here for a while now, parents are short of ways to keep their kids busy through the day. Here are 5 ways that will help parents keep their kids busy during the lockdown and post lockdown as well.

Educational Apps

The internet could be your friend if used correctly. There are various applications available for kids of all ages to learn from. Apps like YouTube kids and Udemy are a great way to keep your kid busy while they learn something new. And while you allow your kids to access the internet and electronic devices like phones and tablets, it’s important to keep a tab on their screen time and track what they are watching. Don’t allow your kids to drown in these electronic devices. While you do this, do keep them informed why you are doing this and why it is important for them.

DIY Projects

Children of all ages will definitely enjoy creating DIYs. This is an inexpensive way to keep your kids entertained and busy. CDs, yarn, popsicle sticks, coloured/newspaper paper, glue, paint, paint brushes, containers, toilet paper rolls and other such things can be recycled to create something new. Children love indulging in activities like this. This will help them develop life skills like Creativity, Focus, Discipline, Self-Expression and Critical Thinking.

Inculcate Reading

Reading is generally a good habit for many reasons like it transports you to another place, improves vocabulary and imagination, greater concentration abilities and a deeper level of understanding. Reading for pleasure can improve the kid’s wellbeing and mental health as well. Hence, inculcating the habit of reading on a daily basis from a young age is proved beneficial for kids. And this lockdown has given you an opportunity to instil this habit into your kids. This will help them in the long run.

Cooking

Has your kid/s shown interest in cooking, but you never find the time to do so? Now that you don’t have anywhere to go, because of this lockdown, it is a great time for you to teach your kid/s to cook. While you are teaching your kid/s to cook, you will help them explore their senses. They can touch, feel and taste different food items. Children who learn how to cook from a young age develop fine motor and hand-eye coordination skills, a varied palette and cultivate a habit of a healthy lifestyle.

Interact with Friends and Family Digitally

We are experiencing a lockdown due to COVID-19. We all have to stay at home to stop the spread of the virus. Because of this lockdown, meeting friends and family has become impossible. But thanks to technology, we are able to see and talk to our loved ones whenever we want. So, from time-to-time, you should get your kids to video call their friends, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins and whomever they wish to talk to. You can also plan fun activities through a video call with their friends.

These activities will help your kids not only during this lockdown but post lockdown as well. Use this time to get to know your kids better and inculcate new habits in them. During this tough situation, it is important for all of us to stay safe and positive. Even though we have been at home for a couple of months now and stepping out to have fun like we did prior the lockdown happened is impossible. Nevertheless, staying at home doesn’t have to be boring. You can make it a fun time for you and your kids. This lockdown will make your bond with your kids even better. So, make the most of it.
