According to a study by the Loyola University Medical Center orthopaedic surgeons, a highly specialized procedure that lengthens bones, based on a procedure called distraction osteogenesis, can avoid the need for amputations in selected patients who have suffered severe fractures. This makes the long recovery process less cumbersome, while providing good-to-excellent outcomes.
